Mix #95: “Different Perspectives”

It was about time for me to record a Drum&Bass/Drumstep mix again. I found so many great tracks since my last mix, and it felt really refreshing to revisit this style once more.

While recording this mix, I remembered a conversation I had with a local DnB DJ about 7 years ago. I had heard him play a set in a small local club and chatted a bit with him after the gig. I did like his music, but I had the impression at that time that there was not much development in Drum&Bass any more, so I asked him:”Do you think that Drum&Bass is still developing? Do you still hear fresh sounds in that style?” He looked at me in a way that clearly showed me that he considered this a very dumb question and replied:”Yes, of course! I have fresh and interesting new records coming in all the time!”

Picking tracks for this mix clearly showed me how naive I was back then. Drum&Bass is still very much alive, it is very diverse and continuously evolving. There are soft and soulful tracks, rough bass monsters, tempo changes and even complete style changes within one track.

This mix shows all these perspectives on Drum&Bass and related genres (like Drumstep).

Tracks I would like to highlight: Celldweller has a background in Industrial music, but has also been incorporating influences from DnB, Dubstep and similar styles. I think this is a very strong combination, and “Tough Guy” is an absolute killer track.

I was also very impressed about Skrillex’s remix of “Goin’ In” – the original version is very different and also kinda cool, but Skrillex has turned this one into one of the most ass-kicking tracks I have heard this year.

Figure’s “Dominate” might sound more like a DJ tool than a normal track to many people, and it is indeed very useful for DJs as it progresses through different tempos and allows you to mix seamlessly from one tempo to another. However, I think this one is also very interesting from a musical perspective as it shows how basslines and melodies can be translated to different genres.

Finally, I am really happy to have used Pendulum’s “Slam” in a mix. It is one of my all-time favorites and still gives me goosebumps when I hear it.

Tracklist:

  • Celldweller – Tough Guy
  • Birdy Nam Nam – Goin’ In (Skrillex Goin’ Hard Mix)
  • Sub Focus – Rock It
