Headliner.fm : music promotion in a social way

A few days ago, I stumbled over a new website called Headliner.fm. It proposes a new way to promote music, and I think the idea behind that is very interesting and goes beyond normal marketing.

The idea is that artists introduce other artists to their fans and vice versa. For every artist that you recommend to your fans on Facebook, MySpace or Twitter, you get “Band Bucks”. Band Bucks are the virtual currency on headliner.fm. The more Band Bucks you have the more promotions you can run.

You create a promotion by writing a short text about whatever you want to promote (a website, a song etc.) and add a link to it. Headliner.fm then suggests this to artists with a similar fan base and they can send it out.

However, this doesn’t mean that your friends/fans/followers just get spammed with random stuff. You get to pick what you want to promote and you have to approve before something gets sent out.

From my point of view, this idea makes a lot of sense. Making people aware of great, new sounds is what we do here at Sweet Headache all the time anyway. If this platform helps make more people aware of Sweet Headache in return, then this is certainly a good thing.

I cannot say yet how well this really works, but I will definitely play around with it and try it. The idea definitely makes sense to me.
