Sweet Headache 048: “Twisted Anthems”

This mix represents a style that I had loved for years – and almost forgotten recently. I am talking about Nu Skool Breaks, a sound that manages to sound both rough and playful at the same time.
I have always been a fan of broken beats, and this sound really blew me away when it peaked 2002-2005. However, I have to admit that I somewhat lost track of new releases after that time…
I was reminded of my old love again when I started working on the “Don’t Wanna Miss You” remix with Madame Summit. It just felt natural to do a Breaks remix of that track – and this mix shows how it sounds in context.
Finger Lickin’ Records has always been one of my favorite Breakbeat labels, and with Jem Stone and the Plump DJs, I included two artists from that label in this mix. It’s funny though how I stumble over some artists unexpectedly again and again in my life as a music nerd: Jem Stone is now working on Electro Swing tracks, which happens to be my favorite style at the moment…
I’m also happy to have rediscovered New Order for this mix. They are one of the few 80s Synthpop bands that still sound fresh today and not too cheesy.
Overall, I think that most tracks here have a somewhat anthemic character while keeping their own twisted, broken but fascinating style. For me it, was like a little time travel, because I dug out a lot of vinyl that I hadn’t heard or played in quite a while.
