Sweet Headache 045: “The Fog Is The Message”

There is a famous phrase stating that “the medium is the message“. According to Wikipedia, this means that “the form of a medium embeds itself in the message, creating a symbiotic relationship by which the medium influences how the message is perceived”.

This sounds a bit abstract, but I understood what this can mean about 3 years ago.

It was a foggy winter day, and I was driving home from work. There was very little traffic, and I was almost alone on the road. I was listening to Burial’s “Untrue” album, and there was a huge hype around that sound at the time. I have to admit that I hadn’t liked the album that much before that day. I found it interesting, but not more.

However, on that particular day, the atmosphere was just right for this music. The fog dimmed all the street lights, and it was almost as if I was completely alone on the road – even though it was only late afternoon. This brought me into a melancholic mood that was not entirely unpleasant. The best thing about this was actually that on this day, the fog taught me to appreciate this sound.

One could probably best describe it as a mix of melodic Dubstep and UK Garage sounds, but I assume it’s best to simply enjoy it without thinking too much.
