Remixes have been a major part of music culture for quite a few years now, but still I have the feeling that they are not taken quite seriously. Many people still see remixes as a pure DJ tool that can be used to integrate some well-known melodies into a DJ set.

For many remixes, this might actually be true, but I think a remix can be much more and actually represent an art form of its own.

An example: Let’s Take “In for the Kill” by La Roux.

Definitely a nice pop song, but not more.

But then, Skream’s “Let’s Get Ravey”-Remix came out. This gave the original song a lot more depth and dynamics and demonstrated to a lot of people that dubstep does not have to rely on slow beats and bassline massacres only.

This remix inspired more re-remixes, like this UK Garage-influenced version by Foamo.

One guy also played live drums over Skream’s remix and charted quite a success on YouTube.

And for some people, this remix was so emotional that they used is as the soundtrack for a 9/11 video that also got raving comments and seemed to resonate with quite a few people.

I have to admit that something like this is rare, but it shows how much a great remix can change the original feeling of a track and make it much more interesting.
